Oral sex and the Bible
(This message was edited by pinoy_celt on 12-24-03 @ 6:43 am EST)

We all know that oral sex has been openly talked about and somewhat accepted at least since Bill Clinton admitted to receiving it from Monica Lewinsky. But this is something that I believe we need to address openly in the church NOW because this is part of the culture in which we live. I will take the initiative and discuss the spiritual reality of oral sex and hand jobs in this post.

First, I’ll give you what people say about why teens have oral sex, which may not be surprising to you. In a March 2001 Ladies’ Home Journal article by Lisa Collier Cool, an 8th-grade girl says this about having oral sex with her boyfriend: “We did it to each other; it was fun. Now we do it at his house, my house, everywhere. Oral sex rules…It’s popular because you can’t get pregnant.” “Oral sex is like the latest sport, an activity kids egg each other on to try,” says Robin Goodman in the article (Cool, 2001). In a USA Today article by Karen Peterson, a 15-year-old girl says:

“Children from grades as early as sixth or seventh who hang from the top rung of the popularity ladder brag about activities such as these. The consensus in my high school is that oral sex makes girls popular, whereas intercourse would make them outcasts. The mentality is that oral sex is as far as you can go without maintaining any level of emotional attachment. It’s something that happens at a party, is whispered about between friends and forgotten about next week. Intercourse is, for some people, a huge leap from oral sex. Intercourse is something that is carefully thought through.” (2000)

A 17-year-old girl in the USA Today article says, “I don’t think of oral sex as sex. I don’t think anybody does (Peterson, 2000).” An 18-year-old guy says kids “like to think of anything else they can do so they can say they are still virgins” in the same article (Peterson, 2000). A 17-year-old guy says friends of his “engage in oral sex to let out sexual tensions. It is socially acceptable. It is seen as foreplay, not dessert (Peterson, 2000).” Dr. Drew on MTV’s Loveline says that young girls perform oral sex on guys because “the message they get is this is how to get and keep a man,” and, “The reaction now is (to oral sex), ‘What is the big deal (Peterson, 2000)?’”

The following quotes are all excuses people make for oral sex. But God’s Word has something different to say. The Bible alludes to it in KJV Genesis 19:1-16,24,25 when it talks about Sodom:

“The two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city. When he saw them, he got up to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground. ‘My lords,’ he said, ‘please turn aside to your servant's house. You can wash your feet and spend the night and then go on your way early in the morning.’ ‘No,’ they answered, ‘we will spend the night in the square.’ But he insisted so strongly that they did go with him and entered his house. He prepared a meal for them, baking bread without yeast, and they ate. Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom--both young and old--surrounded the house. They called to Lot, ‘Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.’ Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind him and said, ‘No, my friends. Don't do this wicked thing...don't do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.’ ‘Get out of our way,’ they replied. And they said, ‘This fellow came here as an alien, and now he wants to play the judge! We'll treat you worse than them.’ They kept bringing pressure on Lot and moved forward to break down the door. But the men inside reached out and pulled Lot back into the house and shut the door. Then they struck the men who were at the door of the house, young and old, with blindness so that they could not find the door. The two men said to Lot, ‘Do you have anyone else here--sons-in-law, sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of here, because we are going to destroy this place. The outcry to the LORD against its people is so great that he has sent us to destroy it.’ So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were pledged to marry his daughters. He said, ‘Hurry and get out of this place, because the LORD is about to destroy the city!’ But his sons-in-law thought he was joking. With the coming of dawn, the angels urged Lot, saying, ‘Hurry! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away when the city is punished.’ When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters and led them safely out of the city, for the LORD was merciful to them…Then the LORD rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah--from the LORD out of the heavens. Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, including all those living in the cities--and also the vegetation in the land.”

There are also other historical instances of ancient peoples practicing oral sex and hand jobs because of the same spirit of pornography that has lingered from Sodom and Gomorrah to the present. The Egyptian story of the creation of the world involved a hand job given by a mysterious female hand to their chief god, according to Christopher Miles (1997). Also, there was the ancient Greek cult of Dionysus, the Greek god of feasting (Burkert, 1987). According to Burkert, when initiated into the cult, women had to get naked and were made to worship a statue of a phallus (a sculpture of an erect penis), which the cult often paraded around publicly (1987). And we can’t leave out the Romans, who displayed phallic symbols all over Rome (Miles, 1997). This was due in part to their worship of their messenger god Mercury, who was depicted with a moneybag and a phallus (Miles, 1997). Moreover, Miles says that archaeologists excavating at Pompeii found an oil table light with a picture of oral sex (1997).

If you look up the word “sodomy” in Webster's dictionary, it defines sodomy as "the homosexual proclivities of the men of the city as narrated in Genesis 19:1-11; carnal copulation with a member of the same sex; the penetration of the male organ into the mouth or anus of another (oral and anal sex)” (1986). I believe the Bible addresses sodomy under a more general category of sexual sin. For instance, NIV 1 Corinthians 6:18-20 say, “Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.” I cannot emphasize enough the meaning of the Greek word for “sexual immorality” porneuo, “to prostitute one’s body to the lust of another.” If we get involved in oral sex and hand jobs, married or unmarried, we are prostituting ourselves to satisfy either our own lusts or someone else’s lust.

And as with any sexual sin, there comes with it the inevitable guilt and shame, assuming of course that most people have a conscience. Ladies, any time a guy asks or demands oral sex from you, he is wanting to sodomize you (whether he even knows what he’s asking or not) because from the Sodom account we can see that oral sex is SODOMY. (There are some who say that sodomy is simply a sin committed as a homo/bi/transsexual, and not for heterosexuals, married or not. However, the sex act itself originated from Sodom because of how the spirit of lust manifested through men who happened to be homosexual, and not because of their homosexuality. If Sodom had only heterosexual men demanding the same sex acts from Lot's two daughters, does it make the act any less sinful? Regardless of whether the men of Sodom demanded oral/anal sex from the two angels that appeared as men or from Lot's two daughters, it would still be the same spirit of lust inspiring the sinful nature of those situations.) If you consent to it, then you are allowing him to get cheap satisfaction from you at the very least, regardless of how it is used (i.e. foreplay), and usually in exchange for sperm in your mouth, face, hair and body. But in reference to the quotes from the magazine articles, the deceptions around oral sex and hand jobs are so great these days that we need to press into God’s Word and Spirit. NIV John 16:13 says, “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth.” We need the Holy Spirit, prayer, and diligent study of God’s Word in our lives to show us what God’s Word is really saying about issues like oral sex. But again, if any of you have fallen prey to this satanic deception, just remember how Jesus forgave Mary Magdalene in John 8:3-11 for her sexual sin, because He’ll do the same for you if you just ask for it with a repenting heart. God bless you
