Review of The Fault in Our Stars

This is one of the saddest stories I have ever read.

The Fault in Our Stars

Main Character: Hazel Lancaster.

Supporting Character: Augustus Waters.

Story World: An unnamed city/town, and a brief trip to Amsterdam

Review:

What could be sadder than reading about two young people dying of cancer?

Hazel and Augustus meet during a support group for children with cancer. They fall in love and work to help each other to get through the medical problems they deal such as stints in the hospital ICU. Their trip to Amsterdam is to meet an author both Augustus and Hazel consider a great writer, Peter Van Houten. Hazel and Augustus read his last book which left off with the characters dealing with a conflict that wasn't resolved so they go to Amsterdam to ask him what happens. They are disappointed to find the author has become a drunk.

Toward the end of the book, Augustus dies from cancer of his bones. The sad scene takes place while Hazel is home in bed. She learns of her friend's death by a 3 am phone call.

The story leaves off with Hazel learning that Augustus has written to Van Houten, asking him to write a eulogy for Hazel, but the writer doesn't learn if Van Houten does. Hazel is still alive, but becoming gravely ill, when the story ends.

I'd give this novel 5 stars.
