We have groundhogs on the continent, though. They're also called Marmotte (French / Canadian) or Murmeltier (German).
However, I always thought Groundhog Day was an "invented holiday", you know for the film with Bill Murray. I was really abashed when an American fellow exchange student back at Uni, whose birthday was February 2nd, told me it was real.
