Personally, I find it much more enjoyable that real world references are kept out of the story. Keeping the characters and towns fictional allows the reader to fill in the blanks with their own imagination and piece characters together from people in their own lives. For example, I know someone who I think would be the perfect model for Stephanie Wyatt. Everytime she's part of the plot, I imagine her as a facsimile of the person I know. The way I picture Stephanie Wyatt is certainly not the same as how the next person pictures her, or the next, or the next, and so on. That's what makes this story so wonderful (for me anyway). You can immerse yourself in a separate universe that's different for everyone.
