I agree that it's important to know why certain stories lose and, equally, why others win. There isn't any guaranteed formula for success and, quite often, it's down to the personal taste of the judge. Probably the best way for you to understand what works and what doesn't is to have your work reviewed in detail. Under the section Request a Review in the Community heading in the index bar on the left of the main WdC page, you can submit work for review by experienced reviewers.

If you wish, I could do a full review of the story you submitted for today's contest, with particular consideration of the requirements of the horror genre. Alternatively, I'm sure one of the judges of SCREAMS!!! would be happy to do the same for you.
