Massive rewrite to those appendices, starting here: "Background: The Book" . I got rid of most of the Latin, but did leave the ingredients and detailed instructions about how the spells are performed. Also, some explanations about how the spells are used and some of the cautions associated with them.
But I completely changed the format. It's no longer written as expository explanations. Instead, they are written in a quasi-fictional manner, like the chapters in BoM. I hope this makes them more readable while also providing a model of how a detailed description of each spell would read in BoM.
Again, no one is encouraged to go into this kind of detail when writing a chapter where someone executes a spell. This is just to give you lots of detail to check against when writing your own chapters.
EDIT: I've only written through the first seven spells. I've no present intention of rewriting beyond that point, though the rest the appendices could use an update as well.
