“We had a call about your decorations, again.”

Cecil grinned at the policemen standing at his front door. Behind them, in the yard, was his grisly handiwork, which seemed to get more macabre and ghoulish with every year. “Which one is it this time?” he asked them coyly, eyes agleam.

“Mainly the witch,” said the chubby officer, glancing over at the scene, “the one eating the child.” The office turned back. “If it didn’t move, people probably wouldn’t complain as much, but the stream of blood—“ The man looked slightly ill.

Cecil giggled, unnervingly. “Oh, come on,” he said through his tooth-full grin, “it’s a Holiday!” The last word came out in an excited shiver. “But you said mainly?”

“The ghost,” said the older officer, bluntly. “You need to stop it immediately. Or keep it from going into the road, either one. It’s causing problems.”

Cecil leaned behind the door for a moment. “It’s gone,” he said irritably. “Some people have no sense of humor.”

“There’s no humor in causing car accidents,” the older officer replied coldly. “And I hope you’re not going to put that thing out at all,” he added, pointing into the house.

“What thing?” Cecil blinked innocently. He followed the pointing finger. “Oh, that’s my goblin decoration. Just got it.”

“Send it back, Cecil.”

Cecil sulked, reaching behind the door and bringing out a mouldering book. He flipped a few pages, muttered an incantation glumly, and the thing disappeared.

“Thank you, Cecil,” said the older officer and looked back at the yard. “Now the rest of them.”

“But—“

“It’s Christmas, Cecil, do the rest of them.”

It took a while, but the remainder were finally removed and peace was restored. However the officers had to return when the cannibalistic elves appeared.

“What?”
