Those small goals are still helpful. For a little insight from my own background: I think it was my second attempt at nanowrimo where I ended up getting around 10,000 words in total. Might have been 12,000 but not more. The finished first draft of the novel was only 21,000. Now that novel has been rewritten a few times (moved from first person to third person) and edited. Now it's a novel at around 70,000 words and just a minor adjustment away from submitting to agents/editors.
Writing is progress, no matter the overall numbers.
