Having trouble wrapping my mind around this: Write a story that sets up your plot...That would be a background story that sets up the plot
Lord Of The Rings example is lost on me (yeah, GASP, never read it or watched it or gathered much from cultural references to it).
Does this exposition act as the entire motivation for story? Is it something that sets the story in motion? Does it act for character motivations?
I'm all over the place with my own story, like where to start it...middle, end or just from beginning, or even further back in time to set up main character.
Knowing what happens in Lord Of The Rings doesn't help me plug this example into the formula for what I would attempt to write. I'm intrigued by it, but vexed from where I stand with my own novel attempt and how this could help identify it going forward, as to the assignment.
Hope my question makes sense and not reveal that I'm so dumb I can't take a simple direction.
