This is the one part of these alternate takes that is a bit of a problem. My assumption (which I shared with Masktrix when he asked about the general rules) is that the rules in the alternate world are exactly the same as those in the "real" world. And that means the book should drag itself back to Will.
But that would limit the potential of the stories.
So, for anyone reading or who wants to write one of these, I would assume this: Yes, the book wants to drag itself back to Will. But it doesn't have to do so right away. And if you write a bunch of chapters or conclude a storyline without the book returning to Will, well ... That just means the book hasn't gotten back to him yet.
