One of the things that's fun about the BoM universe is certain 'fixed point in time' events and how they play out differently depending on how Will acts (or, perhaps more notably, who will is). The line you're referring to is the only line where Will ignores the book - so I have assumed that, if JM bought the book and Will never did, things would play out for him in exactly the same way.
But just because you're seeing the same scene from a different perspective doesn't mean that it will stay that way. Because, in this timeline, JM isn't the same. And that means she'll act differently, and her encounter with Will is going to take the storyline in a very unexpected direction.
