What I loved about this book ... just about everything! The descriptions of the marsh are incredible. It's almost as though the marsh is a living, breathing entity. Which, I guess, it is. It's like the parent Kya never had. I love Tate and Kya's relationship. I was so glad he came back to her.
When I first read this, when I got to the part after the trial, I thought the brief exposoition style from the omniscient narrator broke from the very personal style of Kya's narration. I thought the book should have ended at the outcome of the trial. Then, I came to the very end and changed my mind. I see why it was necessary to write about Tate & Kya's life and Kya's death. The author had to tie up the detail of who killed Chase Andrews. Or did she? Did we need to know? I would have been happy for the author to leave us no knowing who killed Chase. I wasn't entirely surprised by what Tate found in the cabin.
I wasn't too sure about the poetry. Yes, it was a nice detail for Kya to be revealed as the poet, but I don't think the poems added anything to the story. And I don't think knowing that Kya authored them made a difference to the plot or my opinions of Kya. So, yeah. If I were to criticise one point, that would be it.
