They'd been exploring for hours when Morgan decided to rest. “Y’all,” she called, “let’s sit on this shelf and eat.” Not very far from where they scrambled onto the ledge, they settled into a corner, where a shallow hollow protected them from the edge. Nearby, a flattish boulder gave them a place for a Coleman’s lantern, and another made them something like a makeshift table. Finished, Morgan stood and looked around. “I wonder if there’s anything else up here. Has any of you explored this shelf before?” “I’ve been close,” answered Jennifer, “but I don’t remember actually exploring it. You’ve visited this cave more than anybody else, so if you haven’t, we haven’t either.” “I went down there, not up here.” Already, Morgan was scouting for possibilities. “If no-one’s been up here, this shelf is a good place for us to start again.” First Morgan studied the area immediately around their stopping-place. In the corner, she found a second, smaller ledge above. Carefully she felt around in it with a stick, then clambered into it. “Yes, I found a secret passage behind here,” she called. “Let’s explore.” Quickly, the cavers scrambled up the corner and through the keyhole. At least two separate gaps opened around them, but Morgan already had turned to the left, the slightly wider passage. “With all this debris, I suspect maybe a flood once swept things through here.” All the time she was poking with her stick. Suddenly she shrieked. “Oh, a body! Someone died or was carried here!” The cavers surrounded the body. “Whew,” Jennifer breathed. “A cave mummy, and it’s old. Are there any more? It looks like it’s been here almost forever.” “I don’t know,” Morgan answered, "but we need to report it.” [300 words] |
