You will still be able to pay your respects and you had the honor of knowing your friend's mother. Your memories of her and the memories of her within all those she had touched in life are her immortality.
My father's youngest sister never got to see him grow up. Also, she was afraid to visit him, afraid he would be angry that all but him were adopted into well off families after their father gave them up for adoption. She cried in her room for two days after receiving news that my father had passed away April 8th 2013. She had told us she will always regret never getting to know him.
Find comfort in that you did get to know your friend's mother and that you and your friend will both be there for each other in the future.
