Farewell. 299 words
"Are you sure you want to do this?"

Silence followed the question. No, he was NOT sure he wanted to do this. But he knew that he had to. It was time. Brendan looked across the street where the train station loomed. It felt ominous.

Okay, actually it felt cheery. The sun was out, not a cloud in the sky and you could even hear birds in the trees that lined the sidewalk. The train station made of glass and concrete looked like any other small-town train station he supposed. But still, his feelings...

"Do you want me to go with you? I can you know. If you want that is."

Brandon looked at his best friend. Yes. No. Maybe.

"Claire, I have to do this," he said finally. She nodded. When she opened her mouth to speak again, he reached across the park bench and gave her a hug. "I have to...get away. Start fresh."

"You'll write? You won't forget me?"

Brendan laughed. "I don't think that anyone can forget you. But yea, I'll write." Claire nodded.

"What will you do...after..." she hesitated. Brendan leaned back and looked through the canopy taking a deep breath.

"I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. But..." He looked at her, "Be careful, okay?" A petulant look crossed her face. "It’s only three months..."

Uncertainty lined her face. They both looked at the station. Brendon needed to go. Wanted to go. He couldn't make himself move. The future scared him.
“Go. I’ll be okay.” She said. “You can’t pass this up.”

"I’ll come back. When I’m done, I’ll come back.” He stood and grabbed his bag that held what few possessions he owned. She nodded.
“I’ll be waiting.”
Brendon crossed the street and entered the train station.
“Please don’t die.”
