You're absolutely right about Will and Stephanie being linked romantically being a tall order. Like I said, they are like oil and water in nearly every aspect of their personalities which is why I figured they would need a powerful shared experience to bring them to some sort of common ground. The only thing that bothered me slightly about pairing the two of them together is it follows the same clichéd plot as every other romantic comedy.
That being said, the point you made about the A/V guys helping Will out by using the masks and following the plot lines of various 80's and 90's teen movies is, IMO, genius. It makes all the pieces fit together:
Fairfax running a social experiment ✔️
Opposites attract RomCom-esque story ✔️
The guys using their movie knowledge for something ✔️
Masking without necessarily having to create betas ✔️
