I'll say that they're not my favorite characters either for a few reasons I elaborated on in another thread: I don't really have the confidence in writing more magic-based and grander scope stuff and I also don't have much interest in it. The other is that the Stellae, Fane, etc. getting introduced into the plot tends to change the story dramatically into a sort of magical spy thriller. I tend to like my stories (both in reading and writing them) a lot more low key and personal. Not to say the other approach is wrong, just personal preference on my part. Honestly picking a favorite character after I said Chelsea became hard which is maybe why I went more with groups of characters. Part of it is that if I'm writing a character chances are I like them either beforehand or in the process of doing it. To give a recent example, Melanie Heath. I came up with her along with Evie as basically just "Friend A" for Evie and never knew what to do with her. Then in the set up to The Sophomore Chimera I inadvertantly wrote her in a sort of take charge role and decided to go with it. From there other parts of her character started revealing themselves to me and she's since become one of my favorites. There's also characters who haven't done much or had a real role beyond being a name but who, behind the scenes, are developed fairly well. Melissa Adams is probably my favorite character that I can never find a use for. She has what I feel is a fairly interesting situation going on with her that has yet to be revealed but even when she's a choice I can never quite pin down the right storyline to go with it or right way to go about it. So frustrating. |
