It breaks my heart to hear that you had such and abusive and neglectful childhood. I can't imagine what it would be like to not have celebrated holidays. When I was young, it was the most fun thing in the world, spending time with my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins at Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Sitting here, I ache for what you have missed. I admire the fact that you try to make things special for your kids. It can't be easy.
You said you don't typically fit-in with people, but I think you probably fit in with them a little more than you think you do, otherwise you wouldn't receive the invitations.
It sounds like you've done the best you can in providing great, loving memories for your children and I think they'll appreciate that when they are older.
