I like your idea to change font, but I suggest go with simple italics because they are quick and not obtrusive and possibly combined with quotes since they are speaking. Another font idea might be to find a font that is most "machine-like" in design. That would be up to your own tastes.
Definitely quotes though. If their utterances are to represent their way of speaking, it should look like speech.
