Book items already have a place to choose where new entries are added. Originally if one chose the non-blog subtypes and non-blog TOC options, the Book would automatically add new entries at the bottom, while using the blog subtype and blog display options meant the new entries were added at the top.

However, that's been broken for quite a few years, and currently all Books add entries in Blog order, at the top. For Books not used like blogs, using the Manage page is the workaround.

Note that to get the top-down order, one only has to use the Manage page with every other new entry. The zero default order value puts the first new entry at the bottom correctly. It's only when the second new entry is added with a zero order value and a later date-time stamp (the secondary sort) that the order becomes wrong again.
