A support forum for writers dealing with mental illness |

It seems that many of my efforts to control my depression and anxiety have been met with more negative comments than positive from the outside world. A few of the worst comments and advice I have received in my mental health life are: “You don’t need those meds.” “I don’t believe in that psychology shit.” “You don’t have a mental illness.” “Therapy is a waste of time and money.” “All you need is God and prayer.” “You are the crazy one.” These comments hurt, but I managed to keep on my own path when it comes to treating my own health. I believe in using all reasonable treatments for mental illness. I use diet, exercise, medication and talk therapy. It seems that most folks think they know more about my mental health wellbeing than I do. Most agree that exercise and diet are good therapies for depression, but medications and individual therapy are a waste of time and money. I try hard to keep my advice to myself, but there are folks without a Ph.D. that can offer sound advice. I might offer an opinion and encouragement to a friend or family member, but for the most part, I keep my mouth shut. Without therapy, I tend to be a quiet corner mouse and appreciate this forum for support. |
