I'm university and research is one of my least favorite parts. I know Cinn is great at it at this point.
As far as research methodologies go, there is quantitative (measured data expressed with numbers) and qualitative (studying and interpreting things with words). Some common quantitative research methods are things like experiments, surveys, questionnaires, statistics, that sort of thing... Qualitative would be more like in-depth interviews, observing things in their natural setting and then analyzing the results, focus groups, interviews, etc...
I don't know if that helps at all. I'd probably have to see what you're actually researching to know where to start, but almost every thesis would have components of both qualitative and quantitative research, as far as I know.
