Yep, like Whata SpoonStealer said...and to expand on that a little bit, it's the personal, quasi-intimate nature of them. You learn a lot about people through them because a lot of times they're based on the author's reactions to day-to-day situations. While everyone approaches them from different angles and for different reasons, they're not as formal as other kinds of writing...which makes for more interesting reads.
