From "Commission a Custom Merit Badge" -- What happens to a group merit badge if the associated group item: is deleted or the group owner leaves the site or no longer has an Upgraded+ account or while the group item is locked during the grace period? The group merit badge will no longer be visible in the merit badge shop, and no one will be able to award it. What happens to a group merit badge if the group item is transferred to someone else? As long as the group is still active on Writing.Com, the merit badge attached to it will also stay active in our shop. There is also a protocol for transferring "control" of a Group MB from one Group to another at the request of the original Group's owner. That procedure and the fee is detailed in "Re: Transferring an MB..." by The ScaryMaster . In a similar situation, when an account is closed and an Interactive story item is deleted, site policy is that the only way that item can be moved to another member's account is if the owner transfers it before their account is closed. The original owner is the copyright holder of the item, so the continued existence of their item is their choice. In the situation you're discussing, the original owner of the Group item apparently deleted the Group item(s) when they closed their account instead of transferring them to someone else. Thus, it must be assumed that their intention was that the MBs would no longer be available to be given out. Since the choice of when to end the availability of a MB is a right that belongs to the Group owner, it can be inferred that site policy for this situation would be that the Group owner's decision is to be respected.
