They're extremely common in the UK. I've picked up many from the centre of the road and transferred them to the sidewalk because they're also true road traffic accidents waiting to happen. When a rabbit sees headlights approaching, they dart for the headgerow. When hedgehogs see them, they curl into a ball where they are and wait for the car to pass.
