Nope, that's the way it works. Believe it or not, it costs money to keep the servers running . The freebee membership is meant to give you a chance to try before you buy.

One solution is to create a book (which only counts as one item) and then put your writing in the book. It will hold up to 100 items. You can copy/paste your existing ones into a book and then delete the originals thus freeing up space. The down side is that individual items can't be reviewed - only the book as a whole. Also, individual items can't be awarded - only the book. Still, it's a solution Here's an example: "The Donald Diaries"  so you can see how it works.
