Good storytelling is about creating characters your readers love (or love to hate) and throwing obstacles in their path. It's really as simple as that. Your reader wants your character to get what they want. If you give it to them easily, without creating tension, that's boring. I don't think it has much to do with the actual plot and how many times it's been written before. Original plots happen occasionally as humanity evolves (remember the first time someone created a malicious AI? absorbed a human conscience into a computer?) but those stories are no more epic or memorable than the "tired" plots we see coming out of Hollywood. What makes stories memorable are lovable characters and good writing.
