The 'Minor Character Background Story' assignment doesn't necessarily have to be about a character who's present a lot in the story, does it? For the life of me, I can't come up with a thing for any of those in particular. Can I write about a character who's there but doesn't really influence the story much?

I don't know. I'm getting stuck I guess and my writing buddy is out there somewhere drinking coffee and people watching! *Geek* SB Musing

I'm here for a little bit besides my coffe shop stalking. *Laugh* I used it as a flashback feature to look into how my character got into the points she's at now when my Novel starts up.

If it's used for a super minor character is say go after it! Whoever is talking to you and you want to create a scene to explore them. So use it as a device to get an idea of the backstory and motivation of I'd say any character. Then for the antagonist one use it to see why this person is a human and their motives behind the whole bad guy role. *Wink*

i completely agree. if you have something present itself, do it!

For my minor character story, I wrote about someone who is murdered in the first few scenes of the book. So she doesn't actually feature a lot in person. I was going to write about one of the minor detectives, but then I just heard my victim's voice, and it felt right to tell her story. So I agree. If they feel like the person you want to write about, then they probably are.

"Minor" means "minor" - you get to pick which character to explore. Just be aware that if this particular character is being loud and demanding that you tell their story, they may actually have more influence over the novel than you think. *Wink*

This is interesting. Is there mystery around the murder? Just because a character dies early in the story doesn't mean she's not critical to the story. Her backstory might drive the whole mystery. I think the murder victim is an excellent character to profile.

Michelle

Thanks. She is critical to the story, and writing in her voice helped me realise that. Having us write the characters' back stories makes them real, doesn't it? It helps us hear their voice, which is crucial to writing the novel. When I was writing my antagonist story yesterday, I swear he actually took over my fingers *Laugh*

*Laugh* They're all main characters somewhere else, so they all refuse to take the role of minor! However, after a restless night and almost no sleep, I've got some things rolling and scribbled down as much info as I could in my notebook. *ThumbsUpL* I'm getting somewhere. It just takes time to process it all I guess.

Sounds like you need a brainstorming session. Let me know if you want to bounce ideas.

Cheers,
Michelle

I'm also here if you need a brainstorming partner, but email is better with me.

Thanks, Michelle! *Heart* Appreciate the offer, girl. I've spent about three hours yesterday scribbling random notes and facts which I'll need for these side characters and learning from them how to incorporate them into the story.

Fi made a comment in my latest post and made me aware of the extra subplots, so I'll try to keep in on the down side with that. Since I do want to create Since all those characters want a book on their own, I had a few thoughts on how to incorporate them into this story and I think we're all in agreement. They'll stay minor characters with hints at their own future, so to speak.

It's my day off and I'm hoping to get some serious work done on this. I'll email you if I need some help with it. *Hug*

Thanks, hon! *Heart* I'll definitely keep you in mind. I should have plenty of time today to do some serious brainstorming and after yesterday, I think I'm on the right track with all this, but don't yell if you hear from me. *Laugh* I'll email you if I need something. *Hug*
