Dear Sir, In my ongoing efforts to sharpen my craft I've recently come to see that revision and even rewriting is a necessary good for almost all of us. If you outline your first draft or pants it and then deal with the organizational problems, you are likely doing the same work in different ways. ...that is to say if you reach a truly successful piece of fiction. As you receive critique it may seem that principles of outlining are being applied to your work of pantstastic whimsy. It may be, instead, that we read and digest things best in familiar forms without regard to their method of generation. I am endeavoring to be more deliberate and organized in my criticism as I strive for plot and structure in my own writing. Is being aware of a need for structure the same as writing down an outline in the end? Is going thru your pantsed draft for plot in a rewrite? Likely I'm digging what's already been plowed since I've not read Kat or Tobber, but here it is for what its worth. LSO PS. Imagine how much more cogent my comments would be if I revised and rewrote them. Ah well. |
