There's various posts on this, but the general gist is because we don't want someone to signup with a friend, spend $100 and then by day 2 have 100 CR points without actually being involved in the "community". IMHO, while folks lose a few points here and there, this type of purchased CR would highly reduce what CR actually means.

Badges are, of course, each their own reward... CR is a separate system built on top of that and we want it to be representative of activity in the community as a whole, rather than just small circles of friends.

... Granted, we could likely earn more money if we removed the limit... It's not all about the money, though. *Wink*
