in my in-person writing group, one of our authors if frequently called by his protagonist's name 'Dave' rather than his own. This has even extended to other short stories that 'Dave' doesn't make an appearance in. LOL
I have also received critique just on my character names, rather anything involving plot, pacing, POV, or readability. My character names are so offensive some readers cannot get past them. Please excuse me for providing the actual offending names as examples :'Archie' and 'Vanna'.
And since you mentioned J.K. Rowling, you may recall Dean Thomas's name was originally 'Gary' in early drafts. You can always change to something more fitting later, rather than allowing this to grow into a hurdle to writing.
