A great way to give your writing meat, as you put it, is to describe what your characters are doing as they talk or think. If they are conversing include things like picking up a coffee in your speech tags. If they are thinking, incorporate what they are seeing into their thought patterns. Like have them compare a bird they are watching to their own situation or to a person they are thinking about.
