Have you run across Lois McMaster Bujold? I happened on "the Curse of Chalion" in my local library, desperate for something to listen to when my library holds had not yet come through. It was a VERY pleasant surprise. Bujold is a multiple Hugo and Nebula award winner... ...of whom I'd never heard. Her main work is a scifi series, I think, but the medieval fantasy "the Curse of Chalion" was lovely. I also liked her "Captain Vorpatril's Alliance."
