I feel like 'excellent' prose is too often confused with 'poetic' prose, which can be insanely overbearing to most. Clear, natural, and non-repetitive writing is what I aim for (though success isn't exactly guaranteed for someone as green as I). It may seem obvious, or cliched, but I find prose is at it's best within the pages of fantasy or science-fiction novels - where you need to be clear, descriptive, and understandable. Novels based on reality often have the benefit of being tied to real everyday objects, people, and concepts. Thus, peoples minds often fill in the details when you mention something like a 'baseball bat.' You don't have to describe it's shape, its markings, or the use of such an object because the average person is aware of what a baseball bat is. You'll find that fantasy or science-fiction novel will contain more creative, clever, and functional prose (not in all cases, of course) compared to a novel about current life because it's a necessary part of writing the genre.
