I know how you feel, Bob. I'm reading Legends with novelettes from some of the biggest names of fantasy the 90's had to offer. Needles to say I was really excited about this book, not having read anything by most of the authors before.
Lets just say that amongst the really great stories in the book, there are some examples of terrible writing too. Two of the stories I've read so far really made me wonder how these authors could become bestsellers.
There's a story with page long moral preaching monologue, cardboard characters, and idiot plotting, and another story which half way into it still only consists of random pieces of backstory.
