I want to add something to this. My all-time favorite Sci-Fi villain is Dr. Haber, in LeGuin's "Lathe of Heaven". My reason is that absolutely not one thing that he does is for a bad or selfish reason. His motives are beyond reproach. And yet, he is unmistakably wrong, and an unambiguous antagonist through-and-through. I consider this book LeGuin's greatest work, exactly because the protagonist is utterly everything Joseph Campbell would disapprove of, and the antagonist is beyond a doubt the person an honest reader would realize they themselves would be in the story.
