What an amazing story!!! I was an army brat and lived mostly in Maryland and Germany until my father moved us to Washington State to retire. The High School I graduated from was very small town and there was very little diversity, which was weird considering when I was in Germany or Maryland there was nothing but diversity. I can't imagine how terrified you must have been and although it might have been mostly fear, you made a huge difference and that matters.
