For Scrivener users: use the note-card display in the inspector panel on your character sheets and location sheets for this. It's great help keeping minor characters straight.
(By doing this, I hope to avoid repeating an embarrassing mistake I made on a creative writing assignment in school; I actually swapped the names of two secondary characters half-way through a short story. Teacher thought it was hilarious, given I was in charge of the school literary magazine at the time.)
