Names are important. They identify not only our characters, but like you said their personalities.
I had a character who went through most of my writing without a name once. There was a reason for this... I didn't actually intend to name her. But then I had to when I started writing the other half of the book. But no one would tell me her name... they all just kept telling me what her nickname was (and everyone had a different nickname for her). I did finally get her name out of someone, but it was very odd to finally discover her name.
