I, too, had always thought I'd write a book someday but life got in the way. I started working on a novel 2.5 years ago and am still working on it I have more time in summer to work, though, so even though it's been 2.5 years, it's mainly been during the past 3 summers I've been able to do the heavy writing. I joined WDC in September of last year and have learned A LOT about writing. My own work has definitely benefited.
This place can be confusing and overwhelming at first, but you'll get things figured out soon enough. Everyone is friendly and supportive, so don't be afraid to ask questions of anyone! I found I love reviewing and have learned a lot about writing from doing so, so I always recommend newbies jump right in to that. There are contests going on all the time all over the place, and lots of forums to get active in. If you're looking for some newbie forums, check out "The Newbies Academy Group" and "Newbies Academy Registration - OPEN" .
