I am currently writing a novel, in first person, To show what is going on I concentrate on what the POV character sees and hears and how she interprets the voice, actions and body language of other people. Writing a short piece like this might help. But it is fine to tell somethings, just show as much as you can. If you put writing samples up and ask for reviews, specificaly about this issue it might also help.
