IMO "what should we call you" is the actual purpose of the handle.
Whether people use it that way or not.
For keeping track of what people use to sign correspondence, your current system seems optimal. People who do that might only feel comfortable including a name (other than in the handle) with people they actually interact with. In which case, they wouldn't use such a designated space in their BioBlock/Biography page anyway.
