Over the weekend, I came to a decision as to what my NaNoWriMo novel will be: A composite novel, with the frame story being a suspense/crime story with a literary story intertwined within; a Storyteller sits at the bedside of the comatose victim, telling her stories to keep her subconscious stimulated. The short stories he tells are "seen" within her consciousness/dreams.
Read short story anthologies, expand on the themes or plots in them. Hell, most of my unpublished and not shared stories are based on stories I've read before. Also, music can be a great "plot bunny" generator: write what story comes to your mind when you hear a song or two.
