Backstory, as long as it has true story-qualities (not to be confused with true-story qualities but I digress) can be a great way to establish interest in a bigger series, I have found. My experience with a bunch of places has been very favorable (no sales, but a few nibbles and some really encouraging feedback).
As for WYRM - - some novelists, some not. We're all in different directions and different phases of submission but I can float it with them and see how much interest it generates. PENCIL is a review group, not a novel group, but I think the Novel Workshop has re-sprouted.
