An extension to this idea, is calendar notifications. I think it would be useful to opt into email reminders of events on group calendars. I don't use the group calendar system much as I don't think anyone checks it, but if members were to receive email reminders (you could set a reminder date/time when creating an event) I would certainly use it more. Of course opting in/out would be necessary.
