Yes, contest items take up space in your portfolio, but you can try to get an upgrade. Join a review group. They give gp for affiliating reviews with their groups, and you can use the gp to upgrade your account, giving you more space. Click the "Public Reviews" link on the menu on the left of your screen, then click the "Most Actively Reviewing Groups" link at the top of that page to see the most popular review groups. Just look through each one and see which you like best. Personally, I'm a big fan of these ones:

"SIMPLY POSITIVE GROUP" 
and
"Invalid Item" 

In general, I don't think you need to worry about the space much. If you fill up your port, someone will probably gift you an upgrade if you're very active reviewing, entering contests, and so forth.

People might enter a contest even without prizes... you never know. If you earn a little gp reviewing, you will be able to reward anyway.
