11/24/13 Entry (300 words)

Clicking down the wooden hallways in her 5 inch cherry red stilettos with matching lustrous red lips, Scarlet Carroll knew she looked great. I’m going to be a star, she thought as she neared the door at the end of the hallway. Scarlet had come out as a top 5 semi-finalist at a milk commercial casting call; all that was left to determine the winner was an interview. Impending the door, she nervously twisted the knob and entered the room. A man in a business suit sat behind a modern glass desk.

“Have a seat Miss. Carroll,” he suggested. Scarlet quickly sat and smiled prettily.

“We performed a background check on all of our finalists, and unfortunately Miss. Carroll, you will no longer be considered. I’m assuming you know why?” His eyes were an icy blue, and sympathy was not among their elements.

“No sir, I don’t understand at all,” Scarlet said startled, what had been found?!

“Miss. Carroll, you were sent to jail a variety times for stealing.” Scarlet sat in complete dismay, she had never stolen a thing in her life!

“Sir, you must have the wrong person! I’ve never stolen a thing in my life! Please, your information is not right!”

He glanced at his computer, “Scarlet Carroll, eighteen, Salina, Kansas?”

“Yes...that’s me...but I’ve never gone to jail!” Scarlet retaliated, completely flustered.

“Miss. Carroll, I’m going to have to ask you to leave.” Scarlet now stood, tears running down her cherry blossom cheeks. Suddenly, she knew! It was Matthias! Her computer-geek ex-boyfriend who had done illegal company work! He had sent the casting company false jail records! Scarlet looked to the man, his face was cold and intolerant.

“Please leave now, Miss. Carroll.” Knowing there was nothing more she could do, Scarlet left the room.
