Prompt for 11/24 Star Struck (296 words)
by Hutch77 Author IconMail Icon
I’m going to be a star.

That was her dream and she made sure everyone in our small town knew it.

I saw it all coming true for her, but then again I only saw her through rose colored bifocals. I mean that in the way that she was just as perfect laying on my arm staring up into the sky as I knew she would be rocketing into her inevitable fame, leaving me behind. I did my best to never think of myself as any more than a stepping stone to her greatness, but youthful hearts are like eggs in that their shells are hard but terribly fragile. All of my foresight could not stop her parting letter from crushing that shell. Her goal was to get as close to California as a long haul trucker she met at the diner could take her and she could thumb it the rest of the way. She was sorry, that was how it had to be, and it was her and not me.

For years I checked the papers for roadside corpses and the entertainment magazines for up and coming stars, alternating in which one I hoped to find the next part of her story.

Those feelings died with time and I had to smile when I saw her today. I was in the pediatrician’s waiting room with my son that I have with a woman whose destiny stayed in my stratosphere and there she was on the thirteen inch wall mounted television. Security guards are attempting to restrain her after a vicious on stage attack with one of her high heeled shoes on a greasy, overweight man whose infidelity had been exposed by a failed polygraph test to the whole world.

         Congratulations baby. You made it.
