*Dollar* 15 GPs were sent to Arakun the twisted raccoon Author Icon with this post.
Kate left the stall. Waiting in line were two women, talking with each other. They seemed out of place; they both were too well-dressed for a national park, and the older one wore black devices in her ears. From her loud voice and gestures Kate realized she was deaf. Washing her hands, Kate found herself, for no reason, watching the deaf woman in the mirror. The deaf woman slipped into Kate’s stall and shut the door.
The deaf woman’s friend appeared at the next sink. She looked at Kate. “You’re curious, weren’t you? That’s Dr. Ruth Turner, the botanist. She just spoke in the visitor’s center’s auditorium about rare native plants and also disabled access to parks; she’s deaf, you noticed. I’m her assistant.” She knocked at Dr. Turner’s stall door. “I’ll be outside, Dr. Turner.”
Finished at the sink, Kate pushed the hand-dryer’s button. The airplane-roar blasted on. She dried her hands and turned around. Under the roar there was a flush. Something dark dropped to the stall floor. Kat pushed the button again and stooped down. It was a purse.
“Hey, that’s mine!” Dr. Turner yelled under the roar, banging the stall door wide. Kate rushed out the door on the other side of the restroom.
Kate slowed to a brisk, inconspicuous walk, slipping through the crowd. The restroom door banged open, fast. Confusion erupted. “Someone took my purse! She’s wearing red, hurrying out. A small dark-headed woman, wearing red, moving fast…”
Kate found herself surrounded. Dr. Turner rushed over. “You took my purse!”
“I left my purse in the stall, it’s a mistake…” Suspicious eyes circled Kate and the purse.
“No, there was nothing left, and you turned that dryer on to cover up.” Dr. Turner’s eyes and jaw set into steel. “You’re going to regret this.”
