It seems NASA is researching the feasibility of warp drives. The basic idea has been around for a while, proposed by Miguel Alcubierre. While nothing can travel through space-time faster than light, it's pretty well established that space-time itself can deform at speeds much faster than light. Indeed, that's fundamental to the most accepted theory about the Big Bang, something called inflation. The observable universe has a diameter of about 40 billion light years, all expending from the Big Bang 13.8 billion years ago. The only way that the radius is larger than 13.8 billion light years is if the universe itself expanded faster than light.
Anyway, an interesting article. I actually wrote a novel where the "Alcubierre drive" played a small role.
